Path and commitment
In August 2025, Dr. Adline Louis returned to Zanmi Lasante after specializing in pediatric surgery in France. She could have stayed in Europe, in a more stable and secure environment. Yet she chose to return to Haiti, aware of the difficulties, but guided by one conviction: children here have as much right to quality surgical care as anyone else.
Her history with ZL goes back a long way. Back in 2008, she was already working as a line nurse at Lascahobas. After her hospital residency at Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais, she practiced as a general surgeon in Belladère. This journey, marked by learning and returning, testifies to her deep attachment to a mission that goes beyond her personal career.

Her role today
Today, Dr. Louis practices as a pediatric surgeon at Hôpital Sainte Thérèse in Hinche. Her day-to-day work involves operating on children and adolescents, as well as passing on her knowledge to future doctors. For her, supporting the next generation is essential: “training good surgeons means ensuring that tomorrow, more children will have access to vital care.”
A defining experience
Among the memories that have marked her, she recalls a patient admitted to Lascahobas in an emergency in 2015. In a state of shock due to peritonitis, he was stabilized and then transferred to Mirebalais, where he survived. Five days later, he greeted her with a smile of gratitude she has never forgotten. That moment reminded her that behind every medical gesture, there is a life saved and a future preserved.

His philosophy
For Dr. Louis, technique alone is not enough. The difference is also made in the care given to patients:
“Caring with faith and compassion is often what makes the difference in a patient’s life.”
Dr. Louis’ choice illustrates that of many caregivers who, despite crises, return to Haiti to serve their community. Every successful operation changes a life, and every trained doctor ensures a brighter future for hundreds of children.
